BIRLA: LEGISLATURE HAS SOLE RIGHT TO FORM LAW AND IT IS SUPREME

Jaipur: The 83rd All India Presiding Officers Conference here endorsed the view that the judiciary should respect its constitutional boundaries and underlined the supremacy of the legislature, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla said on Thursday.

This comes a day after V-P and Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar slammed the “one-upmanship and public posturing” from judicial platforms. Nine resolutions underlining the need for all organs of state to respect the Constitutional boundaries enshrined in the Constitution were passed at the conference, Birla said.

“All organs of the Constitution should respect their constitutional boundaries. We respect the judiciary and underline its independence but only the legislature has the right to form law and it is supreme,” Birla told reporters after the conference.

On Governor Kalraj Mishra’s remarks on proroguing session to convene a new session, Assembly Speaker CP Joshi said that this subject belongs to the Government, not the Assembly Speaker. Joshi also said that presiding officers should get financial autonomy.
