Sabarkantha police nab ‘magic eyewear’ conmen

Himmatnagar: The crime branch of Sabarkantha police has busted a gang involved in allegedly duping people with a promise of hidden treasure by selling them ‘magic chashma’ (magic eyewear). According to police, the gang members would lure probable customers by telling tales of the ‘magic eyewear’. They also claimed that the eyewear would help them see through the soil and find hidden treasures.

Two of the arrested five member-gang Natvarsinh Damor and Nidhraj Meena used to procure tinted glasses from Delhi and later fix them in golden frames, giving them a ‘magic eyewear’ look and selling them to gullible people. Police inspector MD Champavat said that gang members would invite the gullible customers to a place, make them sit with a checker who would convince them that the eyewear is real, and then the customer would pay for a new pair of glasses.

They have created a Himmatnagar businessman of Rs5.20 lakh. From the five arrested, police have recovered Rs2.70 lakh cash, a car, mobile phones, the ‘magic eyewear’ spectacles and other belongings. A further investigations in underway
