New Delhi : Apollo Micro Systems Limited announces the formation of ShauryAstra Defence Systems Private Limited, a new entity of the Apollo Group created with a single, audacious mandate: to design and develop complete weapon systems, long range systems and full defence platforms for the nation, under the scientific stewardship of its Promoter, Dr. V. K. Saraswat, the architect of India's missile shield.

A Natural Next Step in a Four Decade Journey

For over four decades, Apollo Micro Systems Limited has stood at the heart of India's defence electronics ecosystem. From mission critical onboard avionics and rugged computing to fuzes, actuators, weapon electronics and system integration, Apollo's products fly on the nation's most advanced missiles, sail with its warships and serve its soldiers on land. The Group today commands proven design, development and manufacturing expertise, world class infrastructure, and a track record of delivering under the most demanding qualification standards of DRDO, the Armed Forces and Defence PSUs.

Yet the ambition of the Apollo Group has never been to remain a supplier of subsystems alone. The logical culmination of forty years of capability building is to take responsibility for the complete weapon: to conceive, design, develop, integrate, test and deliver entire weapon systems and long range platforms as a total solution.

ShauryAstra Defence Systems Private Limited is the vehicle for that leap.

Why a Dedicated Entity: The Rationale

A complete long range weapon system is one of the most complex machines humanity builds. It demands simultaneous mastery of propulsion and energetics, aerodynamics and airframe design, guidance, navigation and control, seekers and sensors, warhead integration, launchers and ground systems, secure datalinks, mission software, and the system of systems engineering that binds them into a single lethal, reliable whole. It further demands design certification, extensive trials, safety clearances and lifecycle support obligations that span decades.

Developing a complete platform, whether aerial, naval or land based, calls for a similar breadth of multidisciplinary depth. No single manufacturing organisation, however capable, can house all of this within its existing structure without diluting its core focus.

The answer, followed by the world's leading defence houses, is a dedicated technology and design organisation: an entity whose sole purpose is weapon system architecture and platform development, drawing upon the manufacturing and integration muscle of the parent group.

This is precisely the design of ShauryAstra.

The new entity will function as the technology and development arm of the Apollo Group, concentrating scientific leadership, design talent, laboratories and collaborations for complete weapon and long range system development. The Apollo Group, with its established plants, certifications and supply chains, remains the production backbone, ensuring that every technology matured by ShauryAstra can be industrialised at scale and delivered to the user.

The goal is emphatic: fully indigenous weapons, built with indigenously developed technology, by a private group that commands proven in house expertise across the core disciplines of a complete weapon, namely electronics, propulsion, and warheads and explosives.

The timing could not be more opportune. The Government of India has thrown open the doors for the private sector to act as Development cum Production Partners, prime development agencies and lead system integrators through Make II, iDEX, DcPP and Development Partner frameworks. The nation is actively seeking private champions who can shoulder complete weapon programmes.

ShauryAstra is Apollo's answer to that national call, an entity whose charter is anchored in the unsolved and the unbuilt: the problem statements of the Armed Forces that remain unanswered today, and the futuristic problem statements that will define the wars of tomorrow.

Great programmes are built around great leaders, and ShauryAstra begins with one of the greatest names in Indian defence science.

The entity's development mission will be pursued under the leadership and scientific guidance of its Promoter, Dr. Vijay Kumar Saraswat, missile technologist, national institution builder and one of the principal architects of India's strategic deterrent.

Dr. Saraswat served as Secretary, Department of Defence R&D, Director General of DRDO and Scientific Advisor to Raksha Mantri. As Project Director of Prithvi, he steered the design, development, production and induction of India's first indigenous surface to surface missile.

He is credited as the chief designer of the Prithvi and Dhanush missiles and of the interceptors of India's two tiered Ballistic Missile Defence programme, and with pivotal contributions to Agni 5, the initial operational clearance of the Light Combat Aircraft Tejas and the nuclear submarine INS Arihant.

He began his career on India's first liquid propulsion engine, DEVIL, and holds a PhD in Combustion Engineering along with an ME from the Indian Institute of Science.

The Government of India has honoured him with the Padma Shri in 1998 and the Padma Bhushan in 2013.

Few individuals anywhere in the world have conceived, developed and delivered complete long range weapon systems from first principles to induction.

With Dr. Saraswat as Promoter and guiding force, ShauryAstra inherits not just experience but a proven philosophy of programme leadership: concurrent engineering, deep partnerships with academia and national laboratories, and an uncompromising insistence on indigenous content.

ShauryAstra Defence Systems Private Limited will pursue the development of complete weapon systems, long range systems, unmanned platforms and advanced defence technologies, in close synergy with the Apollo Group's development and manufacturing infrastructure and in partnership with DRDO laboratories, academia, start ups and global technology leaders where appropriate.
