Evacuation of Indians from Ukraine: Another example of PM Modi’s leadership - Hardeep Singh Puri, Union Minister

On the eve of Prime Minister Narendra Modi ji‘s visit to Ukraine I recall being privileged to be a part of Operation Ganga in Budapest in March 2022 to evacuate over 23,000 Indian nationals, mostly students, impacted by the military action between Russia and Ukraine. It was a firm reflection of India’s soft power and global stature under the decisive leadership of PM Modi ji. The mission reassured every Indian. The students who were evacuated under the difficult circumstances dealt with the situation with maturity, poise and understanding; and appreciated the efforts to fly them back home safely, in time. This ability to respond in a purposeful manner, in a decisive manner, to an emerging challenge is what distinguishes this government from all other governments, and Narendra Modi ji’s personal initiative is a hallmark of his leadership. He himself called up the Ukrainian and Russian state heads and pressed upon them the need to ensure the safety of Indians, many of whom were living without proper food and sleep for days on end, inside dingy bunkers that had no ventilation or power supply! Over 6,100 students were rescued from the Hungary border itself. Modi ji continuously supervised and monitored the whole operation, closely following the developments, and today we can look back with pride and satisfaction and say the children were safely handed over to their parents due to the government’s pro-active initiative at the time of the crisis. It is the prime minister’s diplomatic excellence that all the countries in the war zone, be it Poland, Hungary or Romania that we visited with our ministerial delegation, helped us full throttle and evacuated the Indians with alacrity. No harm came to any of them as the state heads themselves took the lead and honoured their friendship with Narendra Modi ji.

Modi’s Har Ghar Tiranga initiative gave rise to new industry led by women - Govind Mohan, Senior IAS officer

The Har Ghar Tiranga Abhiyan, a nationwide campaign launched in 2022 as part of the ‘Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav,’ was envisioned by Prime Minister Narendra Modi as a Jan Andolan (citizen’s movement), urging every Indian to hoist the national flag at their homes, workplaces, and institutions to promote patriotism and unity. The campaign, which began in 2022, continues as part of the nation’s Independence Day celebrations.

While it evolved into a large people’s movement, not many people know that silently it also created new employment opportunities for thousands of women across the country. This initiative gave birth to an entirely new industry driven by women at the grassroots level, reducing reliance on large vendors. Today, Self-Help Groups (SHGs) have become the primary producers of the national flags that are hoisted across the nation in houses and offices by millions of Indians as a celebration of freedom and national unity on August 15 and January 26.

When the Abhiyan was first launched in 2022, there was a significant challenge in meeting the demand for flags. To address this, the Central government procured national flags from large vendors and distributed approximately 7.5 crore flags to states, directly and through post offices. To further support the initiative, PM Modi initiated a revision of the Flag Code of India, enabling the involvement of various stakeholders in flag production, including women’s SHGs.

By the second year, the demand for central government-supplied national flags significantly dropped to around 2.5 crore, as women’s SHGs increasingly took over flag production. A notable example is Uttar Pradesh, which purchased 4.5 crore flags from the government in 2022 but did not buy any in 2023, thanks to the self-sufficiency of its SHGs in flag production.

In 2024, the demand for central government-supplied flags further decreased to just 20 lakhs, with SHGs becoming the primary producers. Across India, approximately 25 crore flags are needed annually, one for every home and the numbers are only growing as more and more people are joining the movement every year to promote patriotism. This shift from large vendors to SHGs has transformed these small groups into a thriving industry. These SHGs now produce and sell most of the national flags. PM Modi’s Har Ghar Tiranga campaign has not only ensured Jan Bhagidari but also generated significant economic opportunities for women across the country, thereby empowering them.

‘Always grateful to PM Narendra Modi’s unflinching support for our space mission’ - ISRO

As India celebrated the first anniversary of India’s successful Chandrayaan-3 mission on National Space Day, it is time to remember and honour the support and motivation we, the scientist community, received from PM Narendra Modi. Throughout the journey from the Chandrayaan-2 setback to the success of Chandrayaan-3, he has been a constant support and inspiration for us. Women scientists, in particular, were delighted by PM Modi’s appreciation of their contributions to the space sector and they are ever grateful to him for that. Modi ji named the landing point of our rover on the moon as Shiv Shakti point, thereby, underscoring the significance of women power and their equal role in the success of the mission. It was a tribute to all the mothers and sisters of the nation. Modi ji also saluted the women scientists in a special interaction and for the first time we felt that our effort and dedication had got their due recognition. The visuals of PM Modi consoling former ISRO Chairman K Sivan after the Chandrayaan-2 mission failure, remain vivid in everyone’s memory. However, the unwavering determination and resolve of Indian scientists ensured the successful moon landing of Chandrayaan-3. Today, India is poised for a bright future, positioning itself to become a global leader in the space sector under the leadership of PM Modi and his unflinching support for science and technology as well as the scientific community. It can never be denied that without his blessings and approval Chandrayaan-3 would not have happened. He was not in the country when the launch took place. But he kept glued to the TV to witness the live event, despite knowing that a mission can fail too, and even apologised for not being able to be physically present with us at this time. This is only a sign of the confidence he has in our ability. The first thing he did after returning to India was travel to ISRO and meet us. He hugged us each and surprisingly, he addressed each one of us by our name! In his speech he said, I bow before the scientific community. That was an emotional moment for us. He also said, the achievement is not just for India, but for the entire human community and reminded us of the impact we had created with the success of the mission. He said all the data collected by the rover would be open to the world for analysis. We are the first country to reach the south polar region of the moon and its data holds significance for the global scientific community. India’s stature in the scientific community of the world went up a few rungs after this feat.
