LS Speaker Om Birla’s Enduring Legacy!

Jaipur/New Delhi: Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla’s tenure of four years has been a witness to unprecedented achievements. Birla, who has become synonymous with service and progress with sensitivity, has tried to provide relief to every section of society in these four years. The list of works done for farmers and deprived classes is very long.

17th LS witnessing Golden period
The 17th Lok Sabha is being recorded as a golden chapter in history of Indian democracy. Under Birla’s leadership, the House demonstrated discipline, commitment and collectivism. It has touched new heights by creating records of productivity since 1960. Discussion in the House, meetings lasting late into the night, opportunities for maximum number of MPs to speak are some of the points for which Birla was constantly appreciated.

Productivity of the first 11 seasons of 14th, 15th, 16th and 17th Lok Sabha from 2004 to 2023 was 82.81, 67, 88.63 and 93.09 percent respectively.

Speaker Birla ensured strict adherence to health safety protocols during Covid due to which 167% work was done in the fourth session of the 17th Lok Sabha held during peak of covid pandemic. It is the highest in the history of 70 years of Lok Sabha.

Discussion time on the Budget also increased
The 17th Lok Sabha has also been successful in achieving objectives of discussion on the budget. 200 hours of discussion took place in the budget presented in the 15th Lok Sabha whereas in the 16th Lok Sabha, there was a discussion for 198 hours while in the 17th the discussion it was for 207 hours.

The accountability of the government towards the House has also increased due to the efforts of Lok Sabha Speaker OM Birla. The 17th Lok Sabha is far ahead in comparison to the 14th, 15th and 16th in terms of answers given by the government during the question hour. The average number of answers given during Question Hour during the 14th Lok Sabha was 2.79, while in the 15th Lok Sabha it was 2.50, 4.54 in the 16th Lok Sabha and 5.2 in the 17th Lok Sabha.

Birla believes that rising above the ideologies of parties, the members should raise the subjects of public interest on the floor of the house and for this they should also get maximum opportunities.

Innovations in parliament
People can now get complete information about their MP’s participation in Parliament on the portal of Lok Sabha. For this, a special link has been given on the portal in which data related to the presence of the MP and participation in the parliamentary work will be available.

New Parliament building has a prominent place
The new building of Parliament has a prominent place in the historical achievements of the 17th Lok Sabha. Prime Minister Narendra Modi dedicated this newly constructed building to the country in a grand ceremony held on 28 May. 12th Session of the 17th Lok Sabha (Monsoon session) will be held in the new building. This state of the art building has been constructed in a record period of just 29 months. All arrangements for environmental and energy conservation have been made.

Rs 801 crore saved from efficient financial management
Lok Sabha has also set new records in financial discipline. Rs 801.46 crore has been saved out of the total allocated budget. It has always been the endeavor of Speaker Birla to make the best use of the available funds. The process of procurement of resources in the Lok Sabha has been made more transparent and accountable. Another saving was secured by controlling the use of papers.

Special focus on keeping everyone healthy
Birla launched ‘Har Parivar Swasth-Har Gaon Swasth’ campaign under which 4 special ambulances are conducting health check-ups of villagers. 32 types of tests including ECG, LFT, KFT are done in these ambulances. There are also arrangements of 180 types of medicines. From November 2022 till the end of May, this ambulance has done health check-ups of the villagers in KotaBundi constituency.
