Covid+ve newborn’s life saved

Jaipur: The City doctors saved the life & leg of a newborn girl who had tested Covid+ve. Baby Mohini was 15 days old and 2.8 kg when she arrived in the surgical unit in a very critical condition.

Parents informed that her (baby) legs remained cold and there was some kind of black shade on her right lower leg and foot since the last five days of her birth, said Dr. Sunil K. Kaushal, Director, Chief Cardiac Surgeon & HOD, Paediatric Cardiac Surgery, Fortis Escorts Hospital, Jaipur.

There were no palpable pulses in legs, her urine output was minimal & the baby was dull overall and had a fever. Investigations revealed high BUN, Serum creatine, Covid positive. There was hardly any blood flowing into her legs. Hence, there was a very high risk of losing both legs if those obstructing clots were not removed from the aorta by a high-risk surgery, said Dr. Kaushal.

After the family’s consent, the operation was done and the baby’s legs showed dramatic recovery. The baby is now Covid -ve, Dr Kaushal added.
