Constituting Legislative Council in Raj: Proposal awaits Prez’s nod

Jaipur: The wait for Legislative Council in Rajasthan seems to be unending as there is no development from the Centre over the issue despite three resolutions sent by the State in over a decade. The Ashok Gehlotled Congress government had shown commitment towards the issue as soon as the government was formed three and a half years ago. The proposal is pending with the Central Government.

Three resolutions have been sent to the Centre in nearly 10 years to clear the proposal to constitute a Legislative Council in the State, which is pending for approval from the Parliament and consent of the President. The Gehlot Cabinet had approved the formation of the Rajasthan Legislative Council on July 8, 2021 and forwarded the proposal to the Central Government. Rajasthan had made a similar proposal to the Centre during Gehlot’s rule in 2012. At that time, there was the UPA government at the Centre but no progress could be made in the desired direction. The Union Ministry of Law and Justice had sought the opinion of the State Government regarding the suggestions of the Standing Committee of Parliament on the proposal for the formation of the Legislative Council, which was passed in the Rajasthan Legislative Assembly on April 18, 2012.
