‘Medicine is sacred, strike is not the solution’: HC to resident docs

Jaipur: In a significant development, the Rajasthan High Court has intervened in the ongoing strike by resident doctors, termed illegal by the court. During the hearing, Justice Sameer Jain emphasized that while the doctors’ demands might be legitimate, striking is not a solution to their grievances. He stated, “You are physicians, not businessmen; medicine is a sacred profession.”

The Court observed, “This is the fifth strike this year, while Rajasthan is the only state where residents’ stipend increases with DA. Doctors cannot go on strike for their professional responsibilities. This is a violation of Article 21 and there are now provisions for punishment in BNS.” On this, JARD representatives requested that ‘no punitive action should be taken against them. Med Education Secretary Ambrish Kumar said that ‘we were having positive talks. The public is troubled, in such a situation legal action is also necessary.”
