International Day of Yoga is celebrated across the globe every year on June 21st. This day symbolizes India’s great cultural and spiritual heritage, which has shown humanity the path to a healthy, balanced, and peaceful life. He systematized yoga into Ashtanga Yoga (the eightlimbed path), comprising Yama, Niyama, Asana, Pranayama, Pratyahara, Dharana, Dhyana, and Samadhi. The International Day of Yoga was initiated through India’s efforts. On September 27, 2014, while addressing the United Nations General Assembly, Prime Minister Narendra Modi highlighted the significance of yoga and proposed the declaration of an International Day of Yoga. He described yoga as an invaluable gift from India’s ancient tradition, one that establishes harmony between mind and body, thought and action, restraint and fulfillment. India’s proposal received unprecedented support in the General Assembly. A total of 177 UN member nations co-sponsored and supported the move— marking the most widespread support ever received by a proposal in the history of the United Nations. Subsequently, on December 11, 2014, the United Nations General Assembly declared June 21 as the International Day of Yoga.

WHY WAS JUNE 21ST CHOSEN?

June 21st is the longest day of the year, known as the Summer Solstice. In Indian tradition, it holds special spiritual significance. According to yogic tradition, this marks the time when the sun transitions from Uttarayana (northward movement) to Dakshinayana (southward movement), a period considered highly significant for spiritual practice. Therefore, June 21st was selected for International Yoga Day.

THE FIRST INTERNATIONAL YOGA DAY

The first International Yoga Day was celebrated with great enthusiasm across the globe on June 21, 2015.
