Woman Dies After Heart-Lung Transplant: Organs Airlifted from Jhalawar, Patient on Ventilator for 3 Day

Jaipur: On Sunday, Jaipur witnessed its first-ever combined heart and lung transplant, but the 23-year-old recipient tragically passed away on Wednesday. The young woman had been on ventilator support for three days.

According to reports, the landmark lung transplant at SMS Hospital in Jaipur was a historic first for Rajasthan. Post-transplant, the 23-year-old’s condition was stable, and doctors confirmed that her heart and lungs were functioning. However, on Wednesday, blood clots began forming in her body, leading to her death.
Complications on Wednesday

Doctors revealed that while the organs were functioning and the patient was stable until Tuesday, complications arose on Wednesday due to the formation of blood clots. This condition, medically termed Disseminated Intravascular Coagulation (DIC), causes the body’s clotting mechanism to malfunction, leading to excessive bleeding. The bleeding spread to all tissues in the patient’s body, resulting in her demise.
Patient on Ventilator Support

The patient had been on ventilator support since the transplant, with her organ functions and vitals being monitored continuously. Doctors had previously stated that the transplanted organs were functioning properly.
Combined Heart and Lung Transplant: A First

Dr. Rajkumar Yadav, the head of the transplant team, shared earlier that the patient was kept on ventilator support in the ICU post-surgery. He noted that all organ functions, including urine output, blood pressure, and oxygen levels, were being closely monitored. This was the first case in Rajasthan of a combined heart and lung transplant in a single patient.
Organs Airlifted for the First Time

On December 15, organs were airlifted for the first time in Rajasthan. Vishnu, a 33-year-old man from Jhalawar, was admitted to SRG Hospital on December 10 following a head injury sustained during a conflict. Despite undergoing surgery, Vishnu was declared brain dead on December 13. His family consented to donate his organs, including his heart, lungs, kidneys, liver, and corneas.

The organs were then airlifted by helicopter to Jaipur's SMS Hospital and Jodhpur's AIIMS Hospital. The heart and lungs were sent to Jaipur, while the kidneys and liver were transported to Jodhpur.
