Surat: One of the six people detained in Surat last week for spitting on healthcare workers while they were conducting a survey has tested positive for COVID-19, raising concerns among health workers here.
Last week, after the court instructed the police to ensure that the accused be tested for the Sars-CoV-2 virus, the six were taken to SMIMER Hospital for sample collection.
However, the doctors at the hospital refused to collect the samples of the accused since none of them showed any symptoms of infection. They turned the police away on the grounds that government guidelines disallow needless testing.
The matter was presented before the local court again which ordered the police to get the tests done.
The doctors again refused to test the accused and prison authorities also denied entry to them without a negative corona report. As a result, the court ordered the accused to be taken into judicial custody.
