Mumbai Indians crush Gujarat Giants by 143 runs

Mumbai: The Mumbai Indians overhauled Gujarat Giants in the first match of the inaugural edition of the Women’s Premier League at DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai on Saturday. Chasing the victory target of 208, the Gujarat team fell short by a massive 143 runs. The Gujarat women got all out at a paltry 64 runs.
Earlier, top knocks from skipper Harmanpreet Kaur, Hayley Matthews and Amelia Kerr and a quickfire stand between Kaur and Kerr helped Mumbai Indians reach a massive 207/5 in their 20 overs.
Put to bat first by Gujarat Giants, Mumbai Indians started well with Hayley Matthews smashing Mansi Joshi for a four and six in the second over. It was an extravaganza when the Women’s Premier League’s inaugural edition went off to a flying start at DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai on Saturday.

The event that was witnessed by a galaxy of celebrities. Bollywood stars Kiara Advani, Kriti Sanon, and singersongwriter AP Dhillon added glamour the tournament’s first match by performing some of his chart-topping songs live on stage. Mandira Bedi hosted the opening ceremony, but after welcoming cricket fans from all over the world to the WPL, attention turned to Bollywood sensation Kiara Advani.

The trophy of the inaugural season was unveiled in presence of captains of all five teams, Smriti Mandhana (Royal Challengers Bangalore), Harmanpreet Kaur (Mumbai Indians), Meg Lanning (Delhi Capitals), Beth Mooney (Gujarat Giants) and Alyssa Healy (UP Warriorz). BCCI chief Roger Binny, Vice-Prez Rajeev Shukla, and Secretary Jay Shah, Treasurer Ashish Shelar and IPL Chairman Arun Dhumal were also present.
