Three-day-long desert fest begins with flying colours in Barmer

Barmer: Barmer is hosting the famous three-day event, ‘Thar Festival’, which began on Saturday. The festival aims to celebrate the colourful life of the desert and promote folk art, culture, history, tourism and handicrafts of the region. The event features folk music, renowned singers and poets, moustache and turban tying competitions, sand art displays, camel decoration shows and cultural performances.

In the series of competitions, Thar Shri and Thar Sundari competitions were the most popular among the audience. This year, the title of Thar Sundari was jointly won by Komal Siddh and Tanu Fulvariya, while Thar Shri was won by Vikram Singh Solanki. The festival commenced with a procession from Gandhi Chowk in Barmer that included local bands, chariots, well-dressed camels and horses, folk artists and women dressed as brides. The procession travelled from Gandhi Chowk to Adarsh Stadium, via the main parts of the city.

The Barmer MLA Mevaram Jain, district collector Lok Bandhu Yadav, Zila Pramukh Mahendra Chaudhary and Chairman at Barmer Nagar Parishad Deepak Mali flagged off the procession. The SP Digant Anand, Zila Parishad CEO Omprakash Bishnoi and ADM Surendra Purohit were also present during the procession. During the tattoo show of BSF’s Camels, the desert ships were specially decorated with ornaments on their feet, neck and back.
