Why Convenience Will Be the Biggest Driver of India's Next Consumer Revolution- Gali Arundar Sai

Hyderabad (Telangana) : There's a moment that happens at almost every big Indian celebration, and no one plans for it.

The mehendi is booked. The caterer is confirmed. The decorations are up. And then, two days before the wedding, someone does a headcount and realises there are eight more relatives coming from out of town than anyone accounted for. Or it's Ganesh Puja, and three cousins who "might come" have suddenly confirmed, with their kids, arriving tonight.

I've watched this exact scene play out dozens of times over the past year, running a business that exists precisely because of this moment. And I've noticed that almost every host reaches for the same instinctive fix: let's just book them a hotel nearby, or let's put them in an Airbnb down the road.

It solves the logistics, but at the same time, undoes the entire point of the gathering.

The fix that solves the wrong problem

Booking a hotel for overflow guests feels responsible. It's fast, it's familiar, and it gets everyone a bed. But think about what actually happens next: your guests check in somewhere else, and the celebration splits into two versions - the one happening at your home, and the diluted one happening in a hotel lobby at 11 PM when everyone has to leave.

The late-night conversations over chai that go on till 2 AM. The cousins stayed up playing cards in the same room they slept in as kids. The grandmother who wants to wake up to the smell of the same kitchen, surrounded by family, on the morning of the wedding. None of that survives the drive to a hotel.

Indian celebrations were never really about the event itself - the mehendi, the puja, the reception. They're about everyone being under one roof for the two or three days around it. The moment guests get routed to a hotel or an Airbnb, hosting quietly gets replaced by accommodation. You've solved a logistics problem and lost the reason you were gathering people in the first place.

Nobody sets out to make that trade. It happens because the alternative - finding enough beds and furniture for extra guests on 24 hours' notice - feels harder than it should be. A hotel booking takes two minutes on an app. Sourcing furniture for the same night usually means five phone calls, at least one vendor who doesn't answer, and another who shows up with half the order. So people default to the easy option, even when it isn't the one they actually want.

What I've seen from the ground

Over the past year, in the process of trying to fix exactly this problem, a pattern has become obvious to me. Most requests come in the night before an event, sometimes the same day, because the guest count changed at the last minute. Weddings, mehendi nights, house warmings, Ganesh Puja, Eid gatherings - the occasion changes, the panic doesn't.

What's told me the most, though, isn't the frequency of it. It's what hosts say afterward. Almost nobody talks about the mattress itself. They talk about being able to stay in the room with their family instead of standing outside arguing with a vendor, or about a grandmother who got to wake up in the same house as everyone else instead of a hotel three kilometres away. The furniture is incidental. What people are actually relieved about is that the celebration stayed whole.

Where India's broader "instant everything" shift fits in

It's worth acknowledging the environment this is happening in. India has spent the last few years building genuinely unusual infrastructure for speed - UPI now clears billions of small transactions a month, and quick-commerce networks have expanded fast enough that a ten-minute grocery delivery no longer feels remarkable in most cities. That shift has reset what "normal" waiting time feels like for almost everything.

But I'd push back gently on reading hosting through that same lens. Quick commerce is solving distance - how fast can a product get to you. What breaks Indian hosting isn't distance, it's capacity - you already have the house, the family, the occasion. You just don't have enough beds, cots, and chairs for the version of the gathering you actually want. That's a narrower, more specific problem, and it needs a narrower, more specific answer - not a faster version of ordering furniture online, but a service built around the exact rhythm of Indian events: short notice, one intense weekend, guests who need to feel cared for the moment they walk in.

The idea worth separating out

Right now, "solve guest overflow" and "book a hotel" function as the same sentence in most people's heads - one is treated as the obvious answer to the other. I don't think they should be. A host shouldn't have to choose between comfort and togetherness just because the guest count went over what the house was built for.

The real measure of hospitality in an Indian household was never how fast you could source a bed. It was whether everyone who came to be with you actually got to stay close to you - for the chai at midnight, the chaos in the kitchen the next morning, the version of the event that only exists when the whole family is under one roof. Somewhere in the rush to make hosting more efficient, that's the part that's quietly been getting outsourced. It's worth asking, the next time a guest count runs over, whether the fix should really be a room down the road - or whether the actual gap is just a few more beds under the same one. There's a moment that happens at almost every big Indian celebration, and no one plans for it.
