Odisha Government Announces Paid Period Leave: A Triumph for Ranjeeta Priyadarshini’s Campaign

Bhubaneswar (Odisha): On the occasion of the 78th Independence Day, the Honourable Deputy Chief Minister of Odisha, Ms. Pravati Parida, announced the implementation of One Day Paid Period Leave for all working women in the state. This landmark decision marks a significant step towards creating an inclusive work environment and supporting the women workforce in Odisha.

The announcement is a major victory for Ms. Ranjeeta Priyadarshini, the founder of the Paid Period Leave campaign. Over the past two years, Ms. Priyadarshini has tirelessly advocated for this policy, engaging with policymakers, ministers, and government officials across various levels, as well as with private organizations. Her efforts have garnered the support of over 25 Indian organizations, reflecting a broad consensus on the need for this progressive policy.

In July 2024, Ms. Priyadarshini organized the first International Conference on Paid Period Leave at the CCI in New Delhi. The event saw active participation from delegates representing over 20 countries. At the conference, Chief Guest Dr. Rinchen Choupal, Director General, pledged to support the campaign as its Global Ambassador. Additionally, Guest of Honour Dr Thousif  Pasha from Bu Abdullah Group UAE announced the implementation of Paid Period Leave in over 25 organizations both in India and internationally.

Ms. Priyadarshini also had the honor of representing India at the UNCSC event in Nairobi earlier this year, where she advocated for global implementation of Paid Period Leave.

The campaign has received widespread support and coverage from national and international print and digital media. In December 2023, the book Paid Period Leave: The Story of Women Changemaker - Ranjeeta Priyadarshini by Pradeep Kumar Singh was launched in Bangalore by Bollywood actress Amisha Patel, further highlighting Ms. Priyadarshini’s impactful journey.

This announcement underscores Odisha’s commitment to advancing gender equity in the workplace and serves as an inspiration for other regions to follow suit.
