Hyderabad (Telangana) : Months of planning go into a family wedding. The caterer is booked, the venue is visited more than once, and the guest list goes through several versions. Yet one question can remain difficult to resolve: how do you comfortably accommodate everyone who comes to celebrate?

For Gali Arundar Sai and Subhash Chunduri, the founders of HostMyGuest, this was a problem they experienced firsthand. At a cousin’s wedding, accommodating relatives travelling from different places became hectic. Hotel rooms had to be arranged, leaving family members scattered across locations when spending time together was an important part of the occasion.

A later experience made the idea more tangible. A friend preparing for a pellichupulu, a traditional Telugu pre-wedding meeting, needed additional seating for guests. Arundar Sai offered sofas from his own home to help. The experience prompted a question: if a relatively small gathering needed extra furniture, how much greater could the need be for weddings and other occasions?

That observation became the starting point for HostMyGuest, founded in April 2026. The company is building its business around On-Demand Furnishing for hosting, helping people prepare their homes and other residential spaces for guests during the period they need them.

Building a business around an occasional need

Hosting is often associated with weddings, festivals and visits from relatives. But the ways people use their homes to bring others together are becoming more varied. A living room can become the setting for a supper club, a terrace can host a weekend brunch, and an apartment can accommodate a book club, a board-game evening or a small music gathering.

These occasions differ in scale, but they can create a similar practical challenge: the space may be suitable for bringing people together, yet lack the seating, sleeping arrangements or other essentials needed to host them comfortably.

For someone organising a family wedding, that could mean preparing an additional flat for relatives. For a person hosting a dinner for friends or a community gathering at home, it could mean arranging extra seating for an evening. The requirements depend on the occasion, the number of guests and the space available.

HostMyGuest is built around helping hosts prepare for these needs without permanently furnishing a space for occasional use or coordinating every requirement themselves. The idea is to make existing spaces more suitable for hosting, whether the gathering lasts an evening or involves guests staying for several days.

The opportunity lies in recognising that hosting is not limited to a single type of event. It is a recurring need that appears in different forms throughout the year.

Bootstrapping by proving the idea first

For HostMyGuest, the initial challenge was to establish whether this need could support a business. Rather than beginning with a technology platform, the founders focused on testing the concept through actual customer demand.

The approach was to build a proof of concept, generate revenue through the service and use that revenue to support the business as it grew. The founders developed the operational side first and moved towards building an application and other technology after reaching a point where customer demand indicated that the model was working.

This sequence allowed them to learn from real bookings before investing in a more developed technical setup. It also meant that the early business had to work through the practical details of serving customers, coordinating requirements and managing available inventory.

For a service that depends on physical setups and specific dates, these decisions are important. Technology can make the experience easier to manage, but the underlying service must first be able to deliver what customers need.

Earning the first customers

For a new business operating in an unfamiliar category, attracting customers involves more than explaining the service. People also need to feel confident that the arrangement will work as expected.

HostMyGuest began building its customer base through personal networks and an organic digital presence. Since launching in April 2026, the company says it has served more than 400 guests across events in Hyderabad. It also reports that referrals account for the majority of its bookings.

One early referral came through a wedding. The bride's side used HostMyGuest for pre-wedding occasions, including celebrations such as the sangeet and haldi. After experiencing the service, they recommended it to the groom's side, extending the company's reach through the same wedding.

The example illustrates how one hosting requirement can lead to another. A family preparing for a celebration may introduce the service to another family facing a similar need, allowing the business to grow through recommendations rather than relying entirely on paid customer acquisition.

For HostMyGuest, these early relationships have helped demonstrate the importance of the customer experience. A host is coordinating an occasion with several moving parts, and the furnishing arrangement needs to fit into those plans.

The work behind the experience

The customer-facing idea may be straightforward, but delivering it requires flexibility. A customer's requirements can change significantly between the initial enquiry and the final booking. Someone may increase an order, double or triple the quantity originally discussed, change the setup, or decide not to proceed. Customers may also request delivery at a very specific time, adding another layer to the coordination.

These changes make planning inventory and scheduling deliveries more complex. The team must understand what a host needs while working within the practical limits of available items, delivery schedules and setup requirements.

Another challenge has been building trust in a new category. In the early stages, some prospective customers were hesitant to pay an advance because they were unfamiliar with the business model. The founders had to spend time on calls and provide additional proof to reassure customers before they committed to a booking.

For a young company, this is part of establishing credibility. Customers need to understand what the service includes, how the arrangement will work and whether their requirements will be met on the agreed dates.

These experiences are also part of learning how to operate the business more effectively. As bookings grow, clearer processes for confirming requirements, managing changes and coordinating delivery become increasingly important.

What comes next for HostMyGuest

HostMyGuest's next stage involves expanding beyond Hyderabad while simplifying its current business model. The founders have set a target of entering at least six cities, with a potential expansion to twelve, by the end of the 2027 financial year.

Achieving that goal will require the company to build operational capacity in new markets while maintaining the reliability expected by hosts. Each location will bring its own customer requirements, scheduling considerations and inventory needs.

The broader opportunity also extends beyond traditional family occasions. As people use their homes for more social and community activities, temporary hosting setups could serve a wider range of gatherings, from intimate dinners and hobby groups to creative meetups and small team sessions.

For HostMyGuest, the challenge is to make this flexibility practical and dependable. That means developing a business that can respond to different occasions while keeping the experience straightforward for the person doing the hosting.

The idea began with a familiar problem at a family wedding and became clearer when a friend needed extra seating for a smaller gathering. Both experiences pointed to the same opportunity: people may have a space where they want to bring others together, but preparing it for the occasion can take additional effort.
