Greenman Viral Desai addresses Tata executives, calls for collective action against climate change

Surat: Viral Desai, renowned entrepreneur and celebrated environmentalist and widely, recently delivered a powerful call to action on climate change to Tata Steel and Tata Pipes executives, reaching thousands of Tata employees across the nation.

Desai, popularly known as the “Greenman” of India, highlighted the critical need for sustainable practices and collective responsibility, honouring the legacy of Ratan Tata, former chairperson of the Tata Group, who passed away last month. In his address, Desai emphasised the severe, long-term consequences of climate change and presented actionable strategies to mitigate these risks.

“Climate change is not just an environmental crisis but an existential threat to the planet, to us, and to the coming generations. Tackling climate change is not the responsibility of governments, NGOs or businesses alone. It is a collective challenge for humanity and we must rise to the challenge to find out how we can overcome it,” he said.

Desai’s address also called on Tata executives and corporate leaders to take proactive steps within their organizations, underscoring that sustainability is both a personal and professional commitment.

“As citizens and corporate leaders, we have the responsibility to act. It is time we shift to more sustainable systems and not just conserve the environment but help it flourish. Even small changes by a large number of people can make a huge difference,” he urged.

Known for his extensive work in environmental conservation, Desai has earned the title of “Greenman” through initiatives that have made a lasting impact across Gujarat. He has championed the planting of over 4 lakh trees in Surat and south Gujarat and spearheaded the transformation of Udhna railway station into the world’s first green railway station. Through these projects, he has created multiple urban forests and habitats for over 100 species of birds, reptiles and insects, making public spaces more ecologically vibrant.

His initiatives also engage the youth, inspiring them to contribute to environmental conservation through campaigns like “Satyagraha Against Pollution and Climate Change,” which has inspired thousands of youngsters to become “Paryavaran Senanis” (Environmental Warriors). He reaches over 10,000 students annually through his “Tree Ganesha” drive during Ganesh Mahotsav, distributing thousands of saplings to encourage sustainable practices.

In addition to his on-the-ground efforts, Desai has chronicled recent environmental strides in his book, Architect of Amritpath, covering initiatives like the Big Cat Alliance and Namami Gange. His dedication has earned him six National Energy Conservation Awards and recognition from the state government for his contributions to urban forest creation.
