The Gray Man movie review: Above average, one-time watch with gorgeous locations, massive set pieces, and Pretty Solid Performances

The Gray Man review:

  • PLOT:

The Gray Man is about moody Agent Six, played by Ryan Gosling, who gets rehabilitated as a spy to serve for a prestigious team alongside the CIA. Six learns he might be killing an innocent person while doing a job where he must "take out" the target. He pauses to gather the pieces and learns the dark truths of his organization. Going rouge begins a mind-bending game of Action-Chase sequences Supposedly for a Flash Drive!

  • SCRIPTING:

The Russo Brothers' espionage action thriller is a messy must-watch which is made possible by the two leads Ryan Gosling and Chris Evans, complimented beautifully by the Indian star Dhanush. Though featuring a basic storyline, the amazing shots, Extravagant action and griping commitment to the performance by the star cast manages to make it easier to get through the 2.5 hours of screen time.

  • DIRECTION:

At least justifying the tag of Netflix’s most expensive production, shots are fired, helicopters and buildings explode, and there is even a hand-to-hand fight scene between Six and Lloyd. The movie seems to be made keeping specific fans in mind. Visuals focus more on aesthetics and in a classic Russo-Style, Non-Verbal details are prominent Throughout

  • ACTING:

Gosling plays it relatively straight, although Sierra 6's real name is Courtland Gentry, a somber, Invisible yet unkillable Spy. With a mix of ‘Blade Runner’ & ‘Drive’ vibes, gosling manages to pull The character of Six perfectly. The top management, executed perfectly by Rege-Jean Page (aka Denny Carmichael) the breakout star of Bridgerton staying to his signature style, instructs one of his senior executives (Jessica Henwick) to hire Chris Evans' psychotic Lloyd Hansen to capture the impossible Sierra Six. Chris Evans' character (Lloyd Hansen), a refreshing break from ‘Captain America’, inquires of Ryan Gosling's character ‘Six’, at one point how he knew that Chris was actually Lloyd considering they had never met. In his second Hollywood production, Indian sensation Dhanush makes a dramatic entrance. Additionally, he gets to show off his fighting prowess by engaging Gosling and Ana de Armas in a lengthy action sequence. Although he has more screen time than one might have anticipated, Dhanush only has a few words to say during those moments. Given that spies, at least the conventional ones, are expected to do more than they claim, this actually seems reasonable. He may be the only character in the film with a strong moral compass, and defined roots, which the Russos emphasize by having him touch a precious rudraksh mala early on. Subtle.

  • CONCLUSION:

If you really have to get down to the bare essentials, this persistent but only marginally above-average action movie only has three or four components: performers that know their jobs (thank God), Surprisingly amazing work done by the supporting cast, Maximum use of the Netflix Budget, smooth action moves, and a lot of phone chatter (Maybe an Ode to old times I guess, With the flash drives and Radios and Phone calls, it seems way too nostalgic for 2022 Audience.)

Mostly a ‘One Time Watch’.For the Spy-thriller Fans, The Gray Man is a visual delight But that’s essentially all it is if you go looking for a storyline or some out-of-the-box creative production, You’re sure to be disappointed. If you’re a Russo Fan, looking for an “Avenger’s Endgame” Extension, disappointment awaits you all the same.

  • 2.5 out of 5 stars.
