MALLIKA SHERAWAT ON LOSING PROJECTS

Mallika Sherawat is all set to return to the big screens with her upcoming film Rk/RKay. Speaking to First India in an exclusive interview Mallika opened up on how a section of the Hindi film industry always talked about her body or hot avatar and never appreciated her acting skills. 

Known for doing Bold roles on screen Mallika will be seen in a subtle character of gulabo , speaking on the character she said “I have earned the name, fame and money now I tend to do the roles that are character based and worth to invest my time and efforts in. It’s time to focus on good work and good scripts.  I have been a huge Rajat Kapoor when he approached me for RK / RKay for Gulabo I couldn’t believe it. I had to research a lot to fit into the character of a 90’s actress Had to get the aura right”.

Speaking on her comeback in the content-oriented film she said, “Bollywood makes formula movies that need masala, 2-3 item songs, hero’s fight sequences and a glamorous heroine and I have been a part of that also. And I don’t see that formula changing anytime soon since it’s been successful. But now with time many movies not working on a screen that’s because of the ott boom audience are more keen on the content”. 

While Mallika was a very popular name back in time she couldn’t sustain her name in the industry. Adding to the Bollywood croon Mallika mentioned, “ I have lost a lot of projects because I didn’t compromise with anything. There were many actors who called me up and said come and see me at night. Just because I did bold characters on screen they thought they got the liberty on me and would compromise with them. But that’s very unlikely of me I have the self-respect I came here to make my career. While shooting for a superhit multi-star-cast film in Dubai, the lead actor of the movie used to bang on my door late at night to just sneak inside my bedroom. The actor never worked with me again when refused”. 

Speaking on what she went through for portraying bold characters she said,” I was ahead of my time I believe all that negative attention wasn’t required. At that time they told me I was spoiling Indian Culture and people burned down my posters. The character assassinated me just for wearing a bikini. I just followed the script of what Bhatt Sahab asked me to do. I never Ran behind any hero or a director for work I believe in getting work on my merit. When Jackie Chan came to India he auditioned for many leading actresses as well but I am grateful that he liked my performance and gave me the character.”

Mallika also opened up on dealing with criticism and rejections, “ I say things how they are and rejections are a part of life. I have a very philosophical view of it. I don’t bother with what people perceive of me it’s their problem. I need to focus on the work I am doing. I receive fan mails from Haryana who looks up to me and tells me that you did it we want to do it”.

On the work front, Mallika Sherawat is promoting her film RK/RKay, which will hit cinema halls on July 22. Written and directed by Rajat Kapoor, the film also stars Kubbra Sait, Ranvir Shorey, Manu Rishi Chadha, Chandrachoor Rai, Abhijeet Deshpande, Abhishek Sharrma, Grace Girdhar, and Vaishali Malhara in pivotal roles.
