KALARIPAYATTU MARTIAL ARTS MAKES ITS MARK IN LUCKNOW

Afirst of its kind Kalaripayattu Training camp kicked off on Sunday at the Chowk stadium of the city to promote the martial art form. The camp has been organised for the Uttar Pradesh team that will be participating in the Khelo India Youth Games in Panchkula in Haryana from the 4th to 13th June 2022.

The practise sessions of the art form witnessed some action-packed moves, witnessing the performers jumping high in the air and performing their feats.

Known as the mother of all martial arts in the world, Kalaripayattu is much more complex and comparatively difficult to learn, says the trainer Sree Jayan Gurakal from the Kannur district of Kerala, who was at the stadium to train the students for the Khelo India games.

“ The martial art involves usage of many techniques that include jumps, flexibility and mental presence and much more. The form however needs much more promotion at the national and international level”, he said.

But that was not all. The workshop will also witness the presence of Imran Ali, from Parbati village of Gonda district who went to learn the Indian Martial art form in Kerala and is back in his state with a vision of setting up a Kalari Gurukul in the city.

“I belong to a poor background and learn the art form while labouring to collect money. But now I am the first boy from Uttar Pradesh to have won six gold medals, 2 bronze medals and 2 silver medals in this particular martial art form”, he added.

“There are many people who wish to learn the art form, but cannot go to Kerala. For them, I have planned to set up a dedicated Kalari Gurukul in Lucknow. Although the place and date of starting the gurukul has not been decided, with the efforts of the federation, my dream is soon going to see the day of light”, he adds. More than 150 students attended the camp on Sunday.
