Journalism beyond headlines

On the final day of the Jaipur Literature Festival (JLF), journalist and visual storyteller Tabeenah Anjum shared her journey into journalism in a conversation with Mini Nanda in a session “Storylines: Kathanak”. A seasoned journalist with over a decade of experience, Anjum has covered politics, gender issues, human rights and marginalized communities across Rajasthan. She currently writes for Outlook Magazine, The Quint, The Gaon Connection and more.

Hailing from Kashmir, Anjum reflected on her early years, recalling how newspapers arrived late due to the absence of trains and flights. She credited her grandfather, an avid listener of Akashvani, for teaching her the importance of verifying news before believing it. Her first school, she said, was her home, where she learned the value of information at her grandfather’s clinic. Observing conversations there taught her how to engage with people and understand different perspectives.

Anjum began her journalism career in Jaipur, working with DNA and several other newspapers. Though she once considered moving to Delhi or Mumbai, she chose to stay in Rajasthan, a place she describes as warm and affectionate. Over the years, she has travelled extensively, reporting from across the country, particularly focusing on Dalits, Adivasis, human rights and women. She recounted a powerful story from Barmer, where young girls missed school because they had to help their families collect water when the tanker arrived.

A passionate writer inspired by Kashmiri poets, Anjum also explored international reporting, covering Pakistani Hindu refugees. She emphasized that journalism is about people and that journalists must stay connected to the communities they cover. As an adjunct professor at Haridev Joshi University, she believes teaching journalism is a twoway street, where she learns as much from her students as they do from her.

Her debut book, From Dynasty to Democracy, coauthored with Deep Mukherjee, is set for release in May 2025. She explained that Rajasthan lacked a comprehensive nonfiction book, inspiring their work.

Speaking about the changing media landscape, she stressed the importance of ethical journalism. She urged journalists to verify facts, minimize unnecessary commentary and filter information carefully in the social media era. “Don’t refrain from expressing yourself, but always confirm the news,” she advised. With rising dropout rates & declining mid-day meals in schools, she called on journalists to report on critical social issues responsibly while stay true to humanity.
