Elevating India’s Soft Power in South Asia

The world’s largest religious gathering, Maha Kumbh Mela is being held in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh. Kumbh Mela is a unique example of Indian soft power in South Asia. Apart from being the world’s largest religious gathering, it is a symbol of India’s cultural, spiritual and economic power. The Kumbh Mela serves as a medium to effectively enhance India’s soft power among its South Asian neighbours, strengthening religious, cultural and trade ties. 450 million (45 crores) people are expected to participate in the Mahakumbh, which will conclude on February 26, 2025, which is more than the combined population of 41 countries.

The Kumbh Mela brings alive the rich cultural heritage and spiritual traditions of India. The event is not limited to Indian citizens only but also attracts pilgrims and tourists from other countries in South Asia such as Nepal, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and Bhutan. Through this, the depth and universality of Indian civilization is displayed. Additionally, it strengthens unity based on shared religious and cultural values, thereby promoting regional harmony and cooperation.

This grand event is spread over 4,000 hectares and its ancient traditions go back 1,400 years to the era of Emperor Harshavardhana (590-647 AD). Emperor Harshavardhana’s legendary generosity in donating property, jewellery and clothes during the Kumbh set a unique example of selflessness, which remains the essence of the festival even today.

Kumbh Mela also makes an important contribution to the economic scenario of India. Organizing it on a large scale provides new energy to the local and national economy. The estimated economic impact of $10 billion (Rs 90,000 crore) reflects India’s economic vitality and organizational capacity. The modern ‘Dome City’ developed near the Yamuna River offers luxury accommodation for $1,200 (approximately Rs 1 lakh) per day. Advanced technologies like underwater drones and sonar systems for water monitoring have been used in the event. 40,000 police personnel, 3,800 water police officers, 56 police stations and 144 check posts have been deployed for security, which will be assisted by AI-enabled surveillance cameras. Health services will include a 100-bed on-site hospital and free eye testing facility, including spectacles, for 5 lakh people. 13,000 special trains and colourful railway stations have been prepared in the transport network to facilitate the movement of pilgrims. The event will provide a historic opportunity of religious and cultural importance as well as for the development of the regional economy and infrastructure.

India’s growing economic engagement with the Global South makes it a strong partner in trade relations with neighbouring countries, Africa and Latin America, making it an integral part of global supply chains and international diplomacy. This economic diversification provides India with resilience against external shocks and promotes inclusive and sustainable economic policies.

India’s economic trajectory and the contrast with other countries are stark. While neighbouring countries are seeking IMF assistance to service their $7 billion debt, India is successfully managing large and complex events like the Kumbh Mela. While many countries grapple with challenges such as high debt, inflation and job insecurity, India has demonstrated its ability to execute large-scale projects effectively.

The Kumbh Mela establishes India as a cultural leader in South Asia. This event emphasizes India’s concept of secularism and unity in diversity. Also, it strengthens cultural diplomatic ties with South Asian countries. Through religious tourism, India builds a bridge of economic and cultural exchange with these countries.

The Kumbh Mela is a symbolic event of India’s soft power, presenting the best combination of cultural pride and economic potential. It not only strengthens ties with its South Asian neighbours but also underlines India’s leadership and influence on the global stage.
