SMS Medicine Dept conducts its first bone marrow transplant

Jaipur: In an achievement by the Department of Medicine at SMS Medical College, Dr Vishnu Sharma, Associate Professor in the department, successfully did the first bone marrow transplant. The transplant was done under the direction of SMS Hospital Superintendent Dr Achal Sharma and Unit Head Dr MK Aggarwal.

Dr Devendra Purohit, media in-charge and senior neurosurgeon of the hospital congratulated the whole team for the success. He said that until now only the oncology department in the hospital did bone marrow transplants but the pressure of the patients is increasing continuously.

“In such a situation, the transplant done by the medicine department with the help of the blood bank will reduce the waiting period of the patients to a great extent,” he said.

Dr Vishnu Sharma said that the 48-year-old patient was suffering from blood cancer. The cottage ward was converted into a BMT Unit for the transplant where the patient has been kept after transplant. “At present, the patient’s health is fine. Soon he will be discharged from the hospital,” he said.
