Role of journalists important in keeping democracy strong: CM Gehlot

Jaipur: Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot said on Friday that the role of journalists is important in keeping democracy strong. “In this era of fake news and misinformation, the responsibility of journalists increases. Today freedom of expression is being attacked by fascist forces in country and abroad. The State government has always been in favour of freedom of speech. In such a situation, journalists should do the work of creating public awareness in a better way by keeping social concerns at the forefront,” Gehlot was addressing the launching programme of Jaipur edition of The Daily Guardian, India News and The Sunday Guardian newspapers at Rajasthan Information Centre, Jaipur on Friday.

The CM said that in the freedom struggle, newspapers played a big role in awakening awareness at the local level. In Rajasthan, Vijay Singh Pathik, Jhabarmal Sharma, Jayanarayan Vyas, Durga Prasad Choudhary, Achaleshwar Prasad Sharma, Karpoor Chand Kulish, Vijay Bhandari and Haridev Joshi brought glory to journalism, he said.

“We did various tasks for journalists. I first started the housing scheme for them. Now, we will try to fulfil the demands. Print media has a different importance even today. People trust news,” Gehlot said.
