‘Reluctant bride’ or party chief: Which way will Rahul Gandhi go?

Jaipur: Will the months of August-September end Congress’ long-standing dilemma of appointing a fulltime President. The current Congress President Sonia Gandhi, according to sources, has not been able to work as profusely as she used to owing to bad health and thus all eyes of the party workers and senior leaders are glued to the culmination of the ongoing organisational elections, since it is then that the new Congress president is elected.

But the biggest question facing the party is if Rahul Gandhi will take over the reins of the party this time around? As of now, confusion prevails on the Gandhi scion’s decision! However, highly placed sources in the grand old party have revealed Rahul Gandhi still wants to play the ‘reluctant bride’ as he does not want to become the national president. Sources claim that at present, Rahul is not in the mood to become president again and has apprised the senior party leaders of his stand. But the perplexed party leaders, who know the gravity of the situation facing Congress, are reportedly trying to talk Rahul out of his position. Word is that senior leaders have advised him to take over the responsibility so to give momentum to party’s prospects in 2024 geenral elections, as the party, in its current situation, may face a bleak outing in the polls if a strong leader does not take over. The Congmen believe Rahul to be that ‘strong leader’ and have also conveyed the party worker’s ‘mind’ to Rahul Gandhi. However, Rahul seems not quite impressed with the beliefs and hopes of the party and its workers and has reportedly not yet made up his mind. The party follows a tradition to declare the president at the last stage of the organisation elections and hence ‘all hands are on deck’ to make Rahul accept the party’s desire and take over reins. It is said that if all goes well, the announcement for party’s Presidency could happen even before the organisational elections end, doing away with tradition.
