‘Open prisons should be replicated across India’

Jaipur: Supreme Court Justice Aniruddha Bose on Saturday said that open jails are like kites, where prisoners can live freely with some strings attached.

He said that prisoners living in open jail are given an arrangement but with restrictions and those who do not follow the rules are sent to regular jails.

“Open jails are like kites where you can fly with some strings attached. It is an arrangement where you can live freely but with some restrictions,” he said.

Executive Chairman of the National Legal Service Authority Justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul said that the houses in the open jail have tin roofs.

They were speaking during the visit to Sanganer open prison here.
Rajasthan High Court Chief Justice Pankaj Mithal said that work is being done to bring the prisoners into the mainstream.

Former Supreme Court Justice Madan V Lokur, High Court Justice MM Srivastava and several other judges present in the programme expressed their intention to open such jails for prisoners in other States on the lines of Rajasthan.
