Onion prices double as heat damages crops

Jaipur: The aroma and taste of onions in the kitchen have become a luxury as retail prices have doubled over the past week. Initially selling at 20 to 25 rupees per kilogram, onions are now priced at 50 to 60 rupees per kilogram.

The main reason for this surge is the reduced supply from Jodhpur’s Mathania and Bhopalgarh areas. Extreme heat has damaged the onion crops. Previously, around 50 truckloads would arrive daily at the Muhana Mandi, but now this number has dropped to 20-25 truckloads. Additionally, the supply from Bagru & Sikar has also weakened.

Dev Anand Bhaktani, a prominent onion trader at Muhana Mandi, mentioned that prices are indeed rising. Currently, the supply from Nashik is slow, and it will take another two months for the new crop from Khairthal in Alwar to arrive. Wholesale prices at Muhana Mandi are currently between 25 and 30 rupees per kilogram.
