Number of women candidates likely to rise this time

Jaipur: The Government of India has passed the bill in both the Houses for reservation for women leading to discussions regarding the representation of women in politics. Rajasthan is one of those states of the country where a lot of women are seen in the politics of the state. Rajasthan has had a woman Chief Minister, the Speaker of the Legislative Assembly has also been a woman leader, a woman leader has also completed a successful tenure on the post of Deputy Chief Minister in the state. At present, there are many women leaders who put forth their voice strongly in the Assembly.

For a long time, the number of women MLAs in Rajasthan has not crossed 30. It is expected that a good number of women will be made candidates from both the parties. In the Rajasthan 2018 assembly elections, 23 women MLAs won the election, but there were four women who won the by-election and after that the number of women MLAs in Rajasthan reached 27, Ramgarh in Alwar, Sahada in Bhilwara, Vallabhnagar in Udaipur, Mandawa in Jhunjhunu were such seats in the state where men became MLAs in 2018 elections, but after by-elections, women were elected on all seats.

In 2013, 28 women made it to the Assembly. In the elections for 15th Assembly, while Congress gave tickets to 27 women, BJP had 23 women candidates. Of these, 11 candidates of Congress and 10 candidates of BJP won.

Rajasthan has 200 assembly seats. The figures of the last five years show that all the political parties of state together did not give tickets to more than 200 women candidates.

At present, there are only 27 women MLAs in the state. It is to be noted that 189 women contested the 2018 elections, but the deposits of 138 were confiscated after which only 27 women candidates reached the assembly as MLAs.
