MP’s petition against ERCP is an attempt to stop rightful water of East Raj: Gehlot

Jaipur: Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot said on Thursday that the petition filed by the Madhya Pradesh government in the Supreme Court to stay the work on the Eastern Rajasthan Canal Project (ERCP) is an attempt to deprive Rajasthan of its share of water. He said that by stopping the work of the Eastern Rajasthan Canal Project by the Madhya Pradesh government, 13 districts of Eastern Rajasthan – Jhalawar, Baran, Kota, Bundi, Tonk, Sawai Madhopur, Karauli, Dholpur, Bharatpur, Dausa, Alwar, Jaipur and Ajmer – has tried to stop the rightful water belonging to Rajasthan.

ERCP is in line with the guidelines of the Central Water Commission
Gehlot said that the DPR of Eastern Rajasthan Canal Project is in accordance with the Guidelines-2010 of the Central Water Commission.

“This project has been made as per the decision of Rajasthan-Madhya Pradesh Interstate State Control Board meeting. MP has built Kundalia and Mohanpura dams on the basis of this decision. According to the data of the Central Water Commission’s river gauge station at Dholpur, on an average, 19,000 million cubic meters of water from the Chambal flows into the sea every year. The ERCP requires only 3,500 million cubic meters of water. State govt is trying to divert this wasted water through ERCP to meet the drinking water and irrigation water needs of the people of Rajasthan,” he said.

“Water is a very important subject for State. Creating legal hurdles in the implementation of ERCP is akin to playing with the future of the state. The Rajasthan government is committed to complete the Eastern Rajasthan Canal Project for the better future of the people of the State. The State government will strongly present its point in favour of ERCP on every platform and will work to remove the water crisis in eastern Rajasthan by winning the battle for its rights,” Gehlot said.
