It’s necessary to contemplate: Why are drops of relief becoming disaster?
Jaipur: Jaipur’s monsoon season, anticipated each year as a welcome relief, often turns into a period of crisis. With every downpour, the city’s infrastructure falters— roads transform into rivers, drains overflow, and power disruptions ensue. Tragically, incidents such as children being swept away in drains, vehicles carried off by floods, and collapsing buildings become alarmingly common. This year, the city has already witnessed three deaths due to water accumulating in basements.
Each monsoon seems to highlight a different issue: in the past, railings were installed on drains after a car was washed away, and dilapidated buildings received attention following a collapse. Currently, the administration is focused on mitigating waterlogging on Sikar Road.
Despite the city’s extensive resources and numerous engineers, new infrastructure continues to be plagued by waterlogging issues. Underpasses fill with rainwater, and newly constructed drains fail to prevent accidents. The question arises: Are the engineers responsible for these designs only concerned with issuing tenders and collecting commissions, or are they genuinely addressing the drainage needs of a growing city?
