GS Shekhawat calls for UCC, stresses need for legal reforms

Jaipur: Union Culture and Tourism Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, at the Law Summit-2024, advocated for a shift from selective to transparent secularism and stressed the need for a uniform civil code. He argued that implementing a single set of laws for all citizens would address issues like triple talaq and eliminate disparities in property rights. Shekhawat dismissed claims that a Uniform Civil Code would infringe on minority rights, calling them false.

He also highlighted the importance of India’s cultural heritage in its global rise and projected a 15% increase in tourism, surpassing the overall economic growth rate of 8%. Shekhawat noted that new laws now prioritise electronic evidence, updating outdated legal codes. He praised the NEP as a crucial step toward developing India, noting that the previous British-era policy was no longer relevant. Addressing the rise in digital crime, Shekhawat stressed the importance of awareness and prompt reporting to ensure victims get timely justice.

He acknowledged the growing challenge of digital fraud & stressed the need for effective measures to address it.
