DGP Umesh Mishra takes VRS, magnanimously paves way for Sahoo

Jaipur: The VRS of Rajasthan DGP Umesh Mishra was approved on Friday and the additional charge of DGP was given to IPS Utkal Ranjan Sahoo, posted as DG Home Guards.

Mishra is learnt to have taken the decision of VRS to pave the way for Sahoo to become the next chief of the state police. Being a key officer of the Gehlot government, Mishra ultimately had to step down but if VRS was not there today then Sahoo would not have become DGP. Earlier, being the State IB Chief also, Mishra’s departure was certain.

As per the Supreme Court guidelines, the tenure of the officer appointed to the post of DGP should be at least 6 months and UR Sahoo will complete 6 months on 30 June 2024. In such a situation, when this fact came to light during the discussion with the CM on Friday, Mishra, showing greatness, himself proposed to take VRS immediately.

History was made as the VRS application was submitted and approved in a single day. Now, the state government can reward Mishra for his sacrifice and he may be made Vice Chancellor of Sardar Patel University of Police, Security and Criminal Justice. Mishra had charge of DGP on 3 November 2022. Sahu, due to retire in June 2024, must fulfill a 6-month service period to become DGP. The Central Govt needs to submit a 3-name panel before Dec 31st. Umesh Mishra’s voluntary retirement aids in this process. The state govt has already submitted the panel, with Sahu’s name at the top. Despite his impending retirement, Sahu is expected to serve 2 additional years as DGP, following the precedent set by ML Lather’s extended tenure in the role.
