Coal from Indonesia for power to put extra burden on consumers

Jaipur: Following instructions of the central government to import six percent coal, the Rajasthan Vidyut Utpadan Nigam ltd has finalized a tender of 3.38 lakh metric ton of coal in next seven months.

The supply of coal will begin from August. Sources said that foreign coal will come at rate of Rs 12,780 per quintal and total expenditure will be Rs 430 cr compared to Rs 250 cr for domestic coal. This amount will be adjusted in the electricity bills in the form of surcharge, which would be around 35 to 40 paise per unit. Consumers with up to 200 units will not have to give the surcharge.
