Avian flu claims over 750 birds at Sambhar lake so far

Jaipur: Avian botulism disease has reportedly claimed lives of around 750 native and migratory birds in the Sambhar lake. Most of the birds died on October 28 and 31. So far, 235 birds have been rescued while 126 died during treatment at the rescue centre. Thirtynine birds were released in the lake after treatment on November 6.

Another 53 birds are still being treated in the rescue centre. Meanwhile, monitoring has been stepped up in all forest areas, national and state sanctuaries. Bird sanctuaries, water bodies and protected areas are being monitored at the district level and steps are being taken to control the spread of the disease. After the sudden death of thousands of birds in 2019, the lake has become a hotspot for this bacterial disease. Over the past week, both native and migratory birds have been found dead.
