Jaipur: Setting a new record, the SMS medical college and hospital has become the first medical college in the country by performing auditory brainstem implant. A team of doctors from SMS Neuro & ENT dept performed the implant on a 14-year-old girl.

An auditory brainstem implant provides hearing to people with hearing loss who can not benefit from a hearing aid or cochlear implant. This is most commonly due to a missing or very small hearing nerve or severely abnormal inner ear (cochlea). The auditory brainstem implant directly stimulates the hearing pathways in the brainstem, bypassing the inner ear and hearing nerve. After infection in brain, the girl lost her ability to hear, the doctors of SMS decided to go for the implant. SMS Medical College Principal Dr Rajeev Bagarhatta, hospital superintendent Dr Vinay Malhotra, Dy Superintendent Dr Pradeep Sharma, Manoj Sharma described it as a big achievement.
