28-year-old woman run over by truck in Mansarovar, family blames Jaipur cops

A truck ran over a 28-year-old woman travelling with her one-year-old baby and sister on a scooter in Mansarovar on Thursday evening, triggering a protest by the family and local residents who blamed the risky method of city police, who hide behind bushes, to catch those violating traffic rules.

Police identified the victim as Neelam Choudhary, a native of Jhunjhunu district. She had come with her baby to Jaipur for medicines. At 4pm, she met her sister at the Mansarovar Metro station.

According to the victim's family friend Kailash Kumar, Neelam was riding pillion on her sister's scooter and going towards the New Sanganer Road when some cops suddenly appeared from behind the bushes and asked a truck driver to stop.

"The cops were hiding behind the bushes. They jumped before the truck to stop it. The truck driver veered off and ran over the scooter," Kumar said.

Neelam's relative Ram Niwas said that while she was killed in the accident, her sister and baby survived but sustained injuries. Brijendra Sain, who was present at the accident spot near Bhargu Path, claimed that the truck had dragged the woman for nearly 50 metres. He also blamed the traffic police's apathy.

"The policemen had already stopped an autorickshaw and snatched keys from its driver. The driver pleaded with the cops to return his keys so that he could take the victim to a hospital," he said. She was taken to a nearby hospital where the doctors pronounced her dead.
