‘Visionary’ Shah’s Justice-First Move!

New Delhi: Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Friday introduced three bills in the Lok Sabha to overhaul criminal justice system in country. Bills seek to replace Indian Penal Code, Code of Criminal Procedure & Indian Evidence Act. With new bills, govt aims to ensure “justice, not punishment”, Shah said while introducing them in the LS.

Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita and the Bharatiya Sakshya Bill will be sent to a parliamentary panel for further scrutiny, Shah said. The term ‘life imprisonment’ has been defined as ‘imprisonment for natural life’. “Shall be punished with rigorous imprisonment for term which shall not be less than 10 years, but which may extend to imprisonment for life, which shall mean imprisonment for remainder of that person’s natural life, and shall also be liable to fine,” new law proposes.
