Swara Bhaskar, Ranvir Shorey & Prakash Raj react to Israeli Filmmaker’s statement on KASHMIR FILES CONTROVERSY

Mumbai (Maharashtra): The International Film Festival of India (IFFI) jury chairman director Nadav Lapid's remarks regarding The Kashmir Files during the closing ceremony have caused controversy among film industry luminaries. The film was labelled "propaganda" and "vulgar" by Lapid. He added that after seeing it, he was "shocked" and "disturbed." Lapid's comment is viewed as "political opportunism" by actor Ranvir Shorey, who also criticised the director for the words he chose to characterise the picture.

The actor expressed his disgust on social media about the Israeli director's remarks about The Kashmir Files. Ranvir wrote on Twitter, “The singling out of a film and the language used to describe it is completely unbecoming of a film jury or critic. It reeks of politics. Cinema has always been the harbinger of truth & change, not an agent to stifle or snuff it. Shameful display of political opportunism at #IFFI.”

Actors Prakash Raj and Swara Bhasker, however, had different viewpoints. Prakash Raj tweeted, “SHAME is Official now…#justasking,” and Swara Bhasker shared a link to a news story about the incident, and added, “Apparently it’s pretty clear to the world…” The cast of The Kashmir Files also expressed their opinion on Lapid’s statement.

sharing the jury report at the 53rd edition of IFFI's closing ceremony in Goa, Lapid had said, “There were 15 films in the international competition — the front window of the festival. Fourteen out of them had cinematic qualities…and evoked vivid discussions. We were, all of us, disturbed and shocked by the 15th film, The Kashmir Files. That felt to us like a propaganda, vulgar movie, inappropriate for an artistic competitive section of such a prestigious film festival.”

The Kashmir Files, a film by Vivek Agnihotri, is based on the 1990s flight of Kashmiri Pandits from the Kashmir Valley. Pallavi Joshi, Mithun Chakraborty, and Anupam Kher play crucial parts in it. The movie was one of the biggest successes of 2022 with box office receipts of Rs 252.90 crore.
