Survey team stopped from entering Gyanvapi mosque

Varanasi: The court-appointed survey committee could not enter the Gyanvapi Masjid premises on Saturday as Muslim protestors blocked the way while the mosque management committee went to court demanding that the court-appointed commissioner, lawyer Ajay Kumar Mishra, be replaced.

Civil Judge (Sr Div) Ravi Kumar Diwakar, who had ordered the video graphics survey, asked both parties to submit their objections and listed the next hearing on May 9. Police also used mild force to disperse the crowd gathered at the mosque. Vishnu Jain, plaintiffs’ advocate who had sought the survey, said the mosque committee obstructed legal proceedings and survey committee members were not allowed inside the premises. He said this amounted to contempt of court.

Jain said they would tell the court on May 9 about the matter and would ask for a specific order to carry out the videography and survey of the Gyanvapi mosque. Police also briefly took one person into custody for disturbing law and order. The man was identified as Abdul Kalam and he later apologised for his act, police said.

The counsel for the Anjuman Intezamiya Masajid, Abhay Nath Yadav told reporters that the court had not given any order to do the videography inside the mosque but to do it till the ‘chabutra’ (courtyard).
