Suriya becomes the first Tamil superstar invited to become a member of The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences alongside Kajol

Mumbai (Maharashtra): Suriya has been making some noise in the film industry for the past year and it has been for all the right reasons. The actor was praised immensely for choosing sensitive films such as Soorarai Pottru (2019) and Jai Bhim (2021) with the latter also being shortlisted for the Oscars 2022. However, the film failed to make it to the final cut of the prestigious Best Pictures list. Although the film did not reach the Academy Awards, the protagonist will represent the country as a committee member.

Suriya becomes the first Tamil superstar to be invited as a member of The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. He alongside Kajol are named among the prestigious jury members who will decide the fate of the Academy nominations this year. Kajol who has already made quite a name for herself in Bollywood is part of the 397 distinguished personalities who have been invited by the Academy this year.

Besides the two, Sushmit Ghosh and Rintu Thomas, filmmakers who won accolades for their 2021 documentary ‘Writing with Fire’ have also been invited for the same. The documentary was also a part of the Best Documentary nominations at the 94th Academy Awards.

Nalin Kumar Pandya, a filmmaker of Indian origin, professionally known as Pan Nalin is also a prominent name on the list along with filmmaker and writer Reema Kagti, known for films like Honeymoon Travels Pvt Ltd, Talaash and Gold.
