Shinde faction claims Sena party before SC date

Mumbai: Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde officially laid claim to the Shiv Sena’s parliamentary and state legislature, in a bid to firm up his legal footing before the Supreme Court, which will address the issue of his political legitimacy on Wednesday. Maharashtra’s future political course for Eknath Shinde-led rebel Shiv Sena faction and political reservations for the Other Backward Classes (OBC) community will likely be set by the apex court, when related cases come up before it. Three SC justices will hear the issues pertaining to the disqualification of 16 rebel Sena MLAs, the motion of no-confidence moved by them against Deputy Speaker Narhari Sitaram Zirwal, as well as the disqualification notices issued to 53 Shiv Sena MLAs by the newly installed Maharashtra State Assembly Speaker Rahul Narwekar.

The Maharashtra government’s efforts to seek political reservations for the OBC community in forthcoming local body elections will also come up before the SC for triple test ratification. Freshly consolidated empirical data was submitted by the Shinde-led government on July 07.

While Shinde flaunted induction of 12 Shiv Sena MPs (out of a total 18) into his faction as his latest political conquest, he also appeared to take charge of the Sena’s organizational affairs. He announced dismantling of the existing National Executive Committee of the Shiv Sena and the appointment of his own ‘men’ on the same. He appointed Rahul Shewale as the leader of the Shiv Sena in Parliament and made Bhavana Gawli the chief whip to replace Rajan Vichare, who had been appointed by former CM Uddhav Thackeray.

Shinde also replaced the Yuva Sena General Secretary Varun Sardesai, cousin of former Environment Minister Aaditya Thackeray, with Vikas Gogawle, son of Bharat Gogawle-- who is the Shinde faction’s whip in Maharashtra. All that remains now is for the Supreme Court to either endorse the BJP-supported political gambit in Maharashtra and Delhi launched by Shinde, failing which, the Thackeray faction will likely rise again.
