Santoor maestro Pt. Shivkumar Sharma passes away at the age of 84

Mumbai (Maharashtra): Pandit Shivkumar Sharma, the musical maestro who took santoor to new heights, passed away in Mumbai today due to cardiac arrest. He was suffering from kidney-related issues and had been undergoing dialysis since. Prime Minister Narendra Modi mourned the death of the legend as he tweeted, “Our cultural world is poorer with the demise of Pandit Shivkumar Sharma Ji. He popularised the Santoor at a global level. His music will continue to enthral the coming generations. I fondly remember my interactions with him. Condolences to his family and admirers. Om Shanti.”

The music director was the other half of the duo Shiv-Hari, the other being flute legend Pt Hari Prasad Chaurasia, that composed some legendary Bollywood music for movies like Silsila, Chandni, Lamhe and Darr. The musical legend was the one who gave the santoor, a lesser-known Kashmiri instrument, its national status and brought it to par with other traditional instruments such as the sitar.

Maharashtra Chief Minister, Uddhav Thackeray announced that Sharma will be cremated with state honours and Sharma’s brother-in-law revealed that his last respects will be paid tomorrow between 10 AM to 1 PM at Pawan Hans.
