Sambhajiraje looking to be Maha’s ‘Chhatrapati’?

Mumbai: Having made a dent in the political sphere of the state through events organized by his Swarajya Sangathan as well as protests against ‘insults’ to his ancestor, Chhatrapati Sambhajiraje may be gearing up to form an independent party in the next few days.

A descendant of 17th century warrior king Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and member of the erstwhile royal family of Kolhapur— Chhatrapati Sambhajiraje—reportedly plans to formally enter the Maharashtra political arena after his stint as an independent MLA.

Sambhajiraje began organizing programmes across the state through his organization ahead of civic polls. As a result 13 candidates belonging to the Swarajya Sangathan have now secured wins in the state Gram Panchayat elections. They have all bagged the position of sarpanch.

A felicitation ceremony of all winning candidates will be held soon. According to the rumours floating on the political circuit, Sambhajiraje may make a major announcement at this function. A meeting of the Swarajya Sangathan has been organized in Pune next week.

For the last two decades, Sambhajiraje has wielded a lot of influence in the politics of Kolhapur. He has played an important role in the struggle for Maratha reservation. The total number of members at the organization currently stands at 89.

After being nominated to the Rajya Sabha by the BJP in 2016, Sambhajiraje called on the MVA government (that collapsed in June this year) to lend him support as an independent candidate in the Rajya Sabha elections held in May. However, the coalition of Shiv Sena, Congress and NCP declined to support him. This left Sambhajiraje with no choice but to withdraw from the fray.
