RIGHT TO HEALTH BILL PROTEST: CLASH BETWEEN DOCS & POLICE, MANY INJURED

Jaipur: Doctors protesting against the state government’s Right to health bill were thrashed by the police in Jaipur on Monday. Initially, police tried to stop the doctors who tried to gherao the assembly but when they did not stop, police lathi-charged them. In the scuffle, clothes of many protesters got torn and many were left bleeding. It is alleged that the police misbehaved with the women doctors.

More than 2400 private hospital owners across the state took to the streets. First, doctors and hospital administrators gathered in the auditorium of Jaipur Medical Association at the SMS Hospital in Jaipur. Then the doctors left SMS Hospital around noon and went to Trimurti Circle via JLN Marg, Narayan Singh Circle and reached Statue Circle in front of Central Park.

Police stopped everyone near Statue Circle around 1 pm. There was a scuffle between the doctor and the police. All the doctors sat on dharna at the Statue Circle where after a while, a clash erupted.

The Joint Action Committee, which was supporting the bill until a few days ago, came back to oppose the bill. The committee was formed by the doctors’ union.

Dr Vijay Kapoor, Secretary of Private Hospital and Nursing Society, said, “The policemen suddenly pulled them down. After lathicharge, there was a stampede. We fell down. If the government does not listen to us, we will protest.”

Another doctor said that the secretary was at the forefront of the protest.
