Movie Review: Anek is a movie with a noble cause but a shoddy screenplay

Mumbai (Maharashtra): India is a country where diversity can be seen in every corner of the country. However, instead of embracing this diversity, people have to face racial and cultural discrimination in their own country. There is one such issue which has been going on since the time of independence of the country and that is North East regional and racial discrimination. Now in such a situation, will the story of the film make a necessary impact on the people and will it be able to attract the audience to the theatres?

Movie Story

Andrea Ceviche, who is playing a character named Edo in the film, wants to play for India in the boxing ring but faces racial discrimination due to her North Eastern heritage. She is determined to raise her voice against this injustice. On the other hand, actor Ayushmann Khurrana is seen in the role of an undercover policeman who has been posted in the North East. The politicians who sit in Delhi, want a peace agreement between North East and India, to gain mass approval and political dominance. Whereas, some political groups in the North East do not consider the North East to be a part of India and want to make a separate country of their own, with a separate flag of North East for their political benefit. This faction forces the use of drugs and weapons to achieve their selfish benefit. Now in such a situation, will Ayushman Khurana be able to stop these groups and get a peace agreement between the North East and the country? You will have to watch the film to find the answer to these questions.

Plus points of the film

After a long time, the film has come on a sensitive issue whose topic is quite strong. The best thing about the film is that it has not been dramatized at all nor the story of the film has been presented with the usual Bollywood masala. Ayushmann Khurrana is seen playing a very good character, while Andrea has also held her ground in the film. Apart from these, Manoj Pava, Kumud Mishra and JD Chakraborty have also done justice to their characters. The film raises many questions such as what the people of the North East generally have to face when they move to another part of the country, whether it is regional discrimination or racial discrimination.

Negative points of the film

The biggest negative point of the film is the screenplay, which is very slow. In the first part of the film, the story is shown in such a slow way that many viewers might even fall asleep. The story also lacks connectivity. The background score is nothing special. At the same time, more work could have been done on the dialogues of the film and the same suggestion goes for the story, although the topic of the film is quite strong.

Conclusion

Overall, although the film presents a strong subject with well-written characters and good acting, the film screenplay lacks the sparkle needed to draw the attention of the audience. They chose to omit the usual Bollywood masala which was a good call but they should have written the story in a way that at least keeps the viewers awake.

The film has been shot in the location of North East India. The film 'Anek' has been written and directed by Anubhav Sinha. While it has been jointly produced by Bhushan Kumar's T-Series and Anubhav Sinha's Banaras Media Works. This is Ayushmann's second film with director Anubhav Sinha after the 2019 film Article 15.
