Maha govt revises BMC seats to 227

Mumbai: The Eknath Shinde cabinet on Wednesday scrapped the delimitation exercise undertaken by the Shiv Sena-led Maha Vikas Aghadi government and reverted to the status quo of the 2017 civic elections.

First India had first reported that the Shinde-Fadnavis-led Maha Yuti government would scrap the MVA delimitation process in its July 08 edition. The two-member state cabinet’s decision to revise the number of elected representatives of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation from 236 to 227 comes a day after a delegation of Congress councillors led by ex-MP Milind Deora met Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and alleged that the increase favoured only one party. Mumbai is divided into seven zones, and 24 administrative wards. Ahead of the 2022 civic elections, the BMC had conducted a delimitation exercise based on population census and increased the number of councillors from 227 to 236. New nine seats had come up in Dahisar, Kandivali, Andheri east in the western suburbs, Ghatkopar, Kurla, Chembur east-west combined in the eastern suburbs, and ParelLalbaug combined, Worli and Byculla in Mumbai city. At the time, political observers had pointed out that the police actions and said this,” Thorat said Tuesday night. He indicated that the sentiments of the activists, however, were roused, and such reactions were but natural and that he was willing to take responsibility and pay the price for the same. Meanwhile, on Wednesday former MVA minister and senior-most Shiv Sena leader Subhash Desai also appeared to support Tuesday’s vandalism in Pune. He said the attack was a natural reaction to the action (rebellion) by the rebel MLAs and added this was just the beginning.
