Kolkata doctor rape-murder: BJP's Shehzad Poonawalla demands Mamata Banerjee's resignation, accuses her govt of 'threatening' critics

New Delhi: BJP National Spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla on Monday called for the resignation of West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, accusing her government of "threatening" critics and summoning doctors in connection with the Kolkata rape and murder case.
"Today, the question arises of when CM Mamata Banerjee will resign. Instead of it, we are witnessing that whoever is raising their voice against this issue, Mamata Banerjee's government is sending them notice and threatening them...The police are summoning doctors," Poonawalla said while speaking to ANI.
His remarks followed the summoning of doctors and leaders, including TMC MP Sukhendu Sekhar Roy, by the Kolkata Police for allegedly "spreading misinformation" about the case.
Poonawalla added, "When their leaders raise concerns, they are being summoned. MP Sukhendu Sekhar Roy has been summoned by the Kolkata Police for demanding an investigation. The government is using institutional means to destroy evidence."
"Calcutta High Court has already expressed displeasure with the Bengal government over this case. Now Supreme Court has taken a suo moto cognizance in this matter. Mamata Banerjee has no right to stay as a CM anymore." Poonawala said.
Earlier on Sunday, TMC MP Sukhendu Shekar had Ray raised questions about Kolkata Police's probe into the case.
In a post on X, Sukhendu Sekhar Ray wrote, "CBI must act fairly. Custodial interrogation of the ex-principal and Police Commissioner is a must to know who and why floated the suicide story. Why wall of hall demolished, who patronised Roy (Sanjay Roy) to be so powerful, Why sniffer dog used after 3 days? 100s of such questions. Make them speak."
On Sunday, the Supreme Court took suo motu cognizance and took the case into its hands. A bench of Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud and Justices JB Pardiwala and Manoj Misra will hear the case on August 20.
The Kolkata Police has summoned the Head of the Chest Department of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, for questioning in connection with the rape and murder of a trainee doctor in Kolkata, sources said on Monday.
The post-graduate trainee doctor was found raped and murdered at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata on August 9, which has led to widespread outrage and protests.
According to the Kolkata Police sources, the head of the Chest Department of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital has been summoned by Kolkata Police to Lalbazar headquarters tomorrow (Tuesday) at 11 am.
Earlier today, West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee said that she had asked the police to arrest the accused as soon as possible adding that if the police are unable to solve it by Sunday, then the case will be handed over to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).
"The day I got to know about the incident from the Kolkata Police Commissioner, I told him that it is a sad incident and immediate action should be taken and a fast-track court should also be set up immediately...There were nurses and security, but I am still unable to understand how this incident took place. Police have informed me that there was someone inside (Hospital). The Principal of RG Kar Hospital has resigned today...Police, Dog Squad, Forensic department and other teams are on the job. Investigation has been started to arrest the accused and police are trying to arrest him as early as possible. If the Police are unable to solve this case by Sunday, then we will not keep this case in our hands, we will hand it over to CBI," she said.
