Guv to vacate Raj Bhavan before Winter Session?

Mumbai: Barely a fortnight after Governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari put his foot in his mouth by referring to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj as an icon of “olden times”, highly placed officials in New Delhi say he may be recalled as early as next week. Since he made the remark on November 19, both opposition parties and members of the Balasahebanchi Shiv Sena, led by Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, have been calling for his metaphorical head. Now, a person familiar with the issue told First India that Koshyari may be recalled by the Union government later this month.

Notably, the second phase of the Gujarat Assembly election is being held on December 05, and the Winter Session of the Maharashtra Assembly is slated to begin December 19. Getting rid of the embattled Governor would help the Bharatiya Janata Party project a “fair image”, amid the Catch-22 situation that is the border dispute between Maharashtra and Karnataka. Further, the move would also protect the Shinde-Fadnavis government here should the Maha Vikas Aghadi coalition, comprising the Shiv Sena - Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray, Nationalist Congress Party and the Congress--take a more aggressive stand in the upcoming Assembly session, this person said. Interestingly, Deputy CM Devendra Fadnavis also hinted on Tuesday that Koshyari ’ s time in Raj Bhavan may soon be at an end.
