EXCLUSIVE! Pan Nalin on Chhello Show’s success: I am overjoyed

Mumbai (Maharashtra): The Chhello Show is not only special because it has been deemed worthy as India’s official entry to the Oscars, but because it has achieved several feats during the short period that it has been released. Talking about the film’s success, its Oscars entry and more, the film’s crew, producers Siddharth Roy Kapur and Dheer Momaya and the visionary behind the film, the director and writer Pan Nalin sat down with Ashish Tiwari from First India for a candid chat.

As the tickets of the film will be sold at Rs 95 a day before it releases in the theatres, Siddharth Roy Kapur shared that it was a strategy to make the film reach as many audiences as possible. “It is the 95th Academy Awards and we want as many people as possible to watch the film. So, we thought let’s have the tickets at 95 rupees a day before the release. So, it all sort of tied in together in terms of what we wanted.”

Revealing his emotions over his film being selected for the Oscars entry, Pan Nalin said, “I am overjoyed, thrilled for the past days. I am really happy with the cast and crew who have worked with me. It is a story that many people can relate to. Be it escaping school, lying to your family or secretly going to watch the movies. And it was not only in India but there were similar stories from many countries. So, in a way, the film going as India’s entry to the Oscars has given a wider opening and I am sure it will speak to everyone on many different levels.”

Sharing his experience as the producer, Dheer revealed, “After I watched Nalin’s previous film, Angry Indian Goddesses, I was determined that I need to work with a filmmaker like him. So, you can imagine, with me being a young producer, it was never about the film but the filmmaker. Working with Nalin has been an incredible learning curve. Even with Siddharth, I got to see how he functions, how he manages the company and how they market the film. It has been an incredible learning journey for me. I wasn’t always into filmmaking but listening to Nalin’s backstory and how he was always a storyteller makes you recall your own journey.”

Recalling how he loved the Shochiku production company of Japan that made some of the finest Japanese films, Nalin mentioned he always dreamed of being associated with them. “When our agent, Orange Studios got a call that Shochiku is buying my film, that was an achievement bigger than the Oscars for me. I immediately asked them whether their logo will come on the screen before my film starts and they assured me that it will. I also realised that my film is the only Indian film they have acquired.”

Chhello Show has been acquired by Neue Visionen for Germany, Karma Films for Spain, Shochiku for Japan, Red Cape and Nachson for Israel and Nos Lusomundo for Portugal.
