Ex Industries min cites Fadnavis on investment jibe

Mumbai: Senior Shiv Sena leader Subhash Desai on Saturday said that he disagreed with Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis’s statement that the 2.5-year tenure of the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) government in Maharashtra witnessed no fresh investments in the state.

“The progress on investments (including the recently announced Vedanta project) was very positive even when the MVA government was in place. We held multiple meetings that moved forward. The Foxconn chairman was there in Delhi and our meeting with him went very well. It was here that he said that they had positively considered Maharashtra as a location (for their investment),” asserted Desai.

Elaborating on investments in the state, he said, “I was the industries minister even during the five-year tenure of Devendra Fadnavis as CM (between 2014 and 2019) and then for another 2.5 years under the MVA government. During my tenure, I pursued investments from Foxconn as well as Vedanta.”

The senior Sena leader further noted that his party, the Shiv Sena had objected to the very government formation of the current Chief Minister Eknath Shinde and Deputy CM Devendra Fadnavis-led dispensation.

“The fact is that for a long period of time the Maharashtra governor (Bhagat Singh Koshiyari) did not concede to the requisition made by the MVA government to authorize elections for the post of speaker in the state legislature. Therefore, the deputy speaker held powers and issued a notice of disqualification against 16 MLAs of the Shinde-led rebel faction. But they challenged this before the apex court. We are confident that the court ruling will hold in our favour,” added Desai.

Talking about the Central government’s stance on various issues pertaining to Maharashtra, Desai said, “All issues related to Maharashtra, including classical status for Marathi, the Union government was reluctant to concede justified demand.” On his appeal for an allparty delegation from the state on issues of common consensus (when he refused to accept the legitimacy of the current Maharashtra government) he said, “It is not a question of Shinde or Fadnavis or Subhash Desai. Every government is dutybound to fulfill its responsibilities to staterelated issues, and all political parties, including the ruling dispensation (on the treasury benches) must work together on these concerns unitedly.”
